Forever LSU…But What Comes Next?

LSU is forever HEAUXME! As a former LSU football student-athlete who transitioned into the business world over nearly 15 years ago, I've learned invaluable lessons about life after playing sports. It's a journey marked by self-discovery, mental health awareness, finding new passions, nurturing relationships, and giving back to the community that shaped me; whether that's Baton Rouge for you or like me, Harker Heights/ Fort Hood, Texas. Everywhere that played a role in your journey matters.

Today, I want to share my insights with you and offer seven tips to navigate this transition successfully.

LSU Swimmers took advantage of their free time in Colorado to explore life beyond swimming

Embrace Self-Discovery: The end of your athletic career doesn't mean the end of your identity. Take the time to explore who you are beyond your sport. Reflect on your values, interests, and aspirations to discover new paths that excite you. To be honest, it took me some time to fully accept this mentally. Though I earned an NCAA Internship just before graduation and then a scholarship to begin my Masters Degree in business and sport management at UCF, there were several times I struggled with my new life because I still had the itch to play professionally. However, those 3 years were critical for self growth and discovery.

Prioritize Mental Health and Wellness: Transitioning out of sports can be mentally and emotionally challenging. Don't hesitate to seek support from mental health professionals, coaches, or mentors. They can help navigate this transition with resilience and self-care. I remember trying to keep it all in...but that is never a solid solution. Connect with your teammates along the journey; network with your mentors, coaches, professors and fans even because many people want to see you win both on and off the field.

Rediscover Your Identity: Your identity is not solely defined by your athletic achievements. Embrace the opportunity to rediscover yourself outside of sports. Engage in activities that bring you joy, whether it's pursuing a hobby, volunteering, or furthering your education. I know...I know... this part can be so daunting or it can become the most liberating. The truth is, change is inevitable and LSU is a catalyst to you becoming the best version of yourself! Get excited about a life anew! It may take some time to find what makes you feel as alive as playing in front of our fans but it's out there!

Cultivate New Passions and Hobbies: Explore new interests and hobbies that ignite your passion and creativity. Whether it's art, music, cooking, or entrepreneurship, investing time in activities outside of sports can bring fulfillment and purpose to your life. This part... since graduation in 2010 I've been on a whirlwind to discovering my true passions and creativity yet I've discovered I am creative. I love photography, writing, teaching, cooking, and entrepreneurship as well. You can find things just for you to enjoy or immerse yourself within an entire community. This can be everything you never knew you needed.

Nurture Family and Relationships: Your support network plays a crucial role in navigating life after sports. Lean on your family, friends, and mentors for guidance, encouragement, and emotional support as you embark on this new chapter. Remember, they love you and they always want to see you win.

Give Back to Your Community: As you carve out your post-athletic identity, remember to give back to the community that supported you throughout your athletic career. Whether it's mentoring young athletes, volunteering, or donating to charitable causes, find ways to make a positive impact. You'll fall in love with creating impact, giving the gift of joy and helping support others on their way to a life of victory and significance.

Return to Your Roots: Visiting your alma mater, like LSU, can be a powerful reminder of where you came from and the journey that shaped you. Take the opportunity to reconnect with your former teammates, coaches, and university community, and consider ways to give back to your alma mater through mentorship, donations, or advocacy. There is no place like LSU. When any Tiger wins, we all win! Find time to schedule a visit. Don't hesitate or the season will sneak up on you. Save for a visit if you live out of state and join your alumni club like the National L-Club so you stay in the loop. It's such a joy to bring your friends and family back. It's an even sweeter joy for you when all the memories come rushing back and you get to look back and see just how far you've come.

Remember, life after sports is a journey of self-discovery, growth, and resilience. Embrace the challenges and opportunities that come your way, and always remember that your worth extends far beyond the field or court. You are FOREVER AN ATHLETE because you are FOREVER LSU!
