Hey Influencer…Your Team in Denim Can Make an Impact!

LSU Athletics continues to be committed to fostering an environment that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion and the prevention of sexual and domestic violence. April is Sexual Assault Awareness month and marks the beginning of our Commitment Month. While we have a number of events scheduled within Athletics, the LSU Office of Civil Rights and Title IX and their campus partners are hosting a number of events this month as well. One of their events will include a social media campaign for Denim Day which will observed on April 26th in Free Speech Alley.

The observance of Denim Day began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped the defendant remove them, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. The Denim Day campaign was launched in response to this case and the activism surrounding it. Denim Day invites community members, staff, faculty, and students to make a social statement with their fashion by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual violence.

To participate, wear denim within the next 2 weeks and take a picture, video, or any other visual you choose, email them to Mopera1@lsu.edu with the subject, Denim Day, by April 18th. In that email, please include the words “I wear denim because….” (Suggestions will follow at the end of this post). Once all submissions are received, we will combine them to create a promotional video via social media that will run on Denim Day and throughout the rest of the month.

Wording suggestions:

●       I wear denim because I support survivors.

●     I wear denim because I am an ally.

●       I wear denim because I am an advocate.
